ALPRANEX SR-0.5 (Alprazolam 0.5 mg Tablets)

DESCRIPTION

Alprazolam is a triazolo analogue of benzodiazepine which is indicated as an anti-anxiety drug. It also has antidepressant activity independent of its anxiolytic activity.

DOSAGE

Starting dose is 0.25-0.5 mg three times daily and maximum 3-4 mg daily. The drug should be given in divided doses.

CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY

Alprazolam not only lifts mood but also treats primary depression. It enhances the transmission of GABA-an inhibitory neuro transmitter. GABA plays a vital role in the mechanism of anxiety.

INDICATIONS

Anxiety disorders and short term relief from symptoms of anxiety. Anxiety associated with depression.

CONTRA INDICATIONS

Hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines. Acute narrow angle glaucoma.

SIDE EFFECTS

Drowsiness or light headaches, withdrawal seizures, anorexia, transient amnesia, loss of coordination, slurred speech and pruritus.

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Potentiates the action of alcohol and CNS depressants. It also enhances the action of Imipramine and desipramine.

AVAILABILITY

Alpranex is available in strips  of  ten  uncoated sustained release tablets containing Alprazolam IP 0.5mg.
