ASDA-200 (S-ADENOSYL METHIONINE TABLETS)
DESCRIPTION
S-Adenosyl methionine is a naturally occurring compound. It works by helping to balance chemicals in the brain and reducing inflammation in the body. People who don’t make enough SAMe naturally may be helped by taking SAMe as a supplement.
S-Adenosyl methionine (SAMe) is involved in many important processes. It plays a role in the immune system, maintains cell membranes and helps produce and break down brain chemicals such as serotonin, melatonin and dopamine. It works with Vitamin B12 and folate (Vitamin B6). Being deficient in either Vitamin B12 or folate may reduce levels of SAMe in the body.
S-Adenosyl methionine (SAMe) is a direct metabolite of the essential amino acid L-methionine. SAMe plays a crucial biochemical role in the body by donating a one-carbon methyl group in a process called transmethylation. SAMe formed from the reaction of L-methionine and adenosine triphosphate catalyzed by the enzyme S-Adenosyl methionine synthetase, is the methyl-group donor in the biosynthesis of both DNA & RNA nucleic acids, phospholipids, proteins, epinephrine, creatine and other molecules.
DOSAGE
Recommended doses of SAMe vary depending on the health condition being treated. The following list gives information on the dosages used in studies for each condition:
Depression: 800-1600 mg per day of SAMe per day, in 2 divided doses (morning and afternoon)
Alcoholic Liver disease: 600-1200 mg per day in divided doses for 6 months enhances liver function.
Osteoarthritis: 600-1200 mg per day in 2-3 divided doses.
Fibromyalgia: A dosage of 400 mg twice a day for 6 weeks.
PHARMACOKINETICS
Absorption
S-Adenosyl methionine is absorbed from the small intestine following oral intake. As absorption is affected by food, it is best to take on an empty stomach. Bioavailability is low following oral intake.
Metabolism
Approximately 50% of S-Adenosyl methionine (SAMe) is metabolized in the liver. SAMe is metabolized to S-adenosylhomocysteine, which is then metabolized to homocysteine. Homocysteine can either be metabolized to cystathionine and then cysteine or to methionine. The cofactor in the metabolism of homocysteine to cysteine is Vitamin B6. Cofactors for the metabolism of homocysteine to methionine are folic acid, Vitamin B12 and betaine.
INDICATIONS
- Depression
- Anxiety associated with depression
- Liver problems
- Osteoarthritis
- Joint Health
CONTRA INDICATIONS
SAMe should never be given to a child without doctor’s supervision. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take SAMe.
SIDE EFFECTS & PRECAUTIONS
Gastrointestinal, psychiatric, insomnia, allergy and rash are most common side effects of the medication. Other side effects may include dry mouth, nausea, gas, headache or a feeling of elation.
Starting with a low dose (for example 200mg per day) and increasing slowly helps avoid stomach upset.
People with bipolar disorders (manic depression) should not take SAMe since it may worsen manic episodes.
AVAILABILITY
ASDA-200 is available in alu-alu strips of ten film coated tablets containing S-Adenosyl methionine 200mg.
