ESTILO-10/20/HS/PLUSE/E (Escitalopram Tablets )
DESCRIPTION
Escitalopram is an antidepressant of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class, prescribed for major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, or panic disorder(significant behavioral change). It increases the amount of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance and improve certain mood problems.
DOSAGE
The starting dose of Escitalopram is 10mg daily ranging to 30mg daily in divided doses in adult patients. In children and elderly, the doses are adjusted accordingly.
It is also administered in a combination along with Clonazepam or Etizolam.
STORAGE
Store escitalopram at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep escitalopram out of the reach of children and away from pets.
CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY
Escitalopram increases intrasynaptic levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin by blocking the reuptake of the neurotransmitter into the presynaptic neuron. Of the SSRIs currently on the market, escitalopram has the highest selectivity for the serotonin transporter(SERT) compared to the norepinephrine transporter(NET), making the side-effect profile relatively mild in comparison to less-selective SSRIs. The enantiomer of escitalopram counteracts to a certain degree of the serotonin-enhancing action of escitalopram. As a result, escitalopram has been claimed to be a more potent antidepressant than citalopram. Being a SSRI, escitalopram should not be given concurrently with MAOIs or other serotonergic medications.
INDICATIONS
This medication is used for treating depression or generalized anxiety disorder. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor. Other indications could be anxiety panic disorders(significant behaviuor change), obsessive compulsive disorders or acute depression.
CONTRA INDICATIONS
Concomitant use with or within 2 weeks of MAOI (Monoamine oxidase inhibitors) withdrawal along with pimozide, hypersensitivity to escitalopram or citalopram.
SIDE EFFECTS
Some common side effects could be Nausea, increased appetite, taste disturbances, drowsiness, increased sweating, confusion or weakness.
