NEXOLAN-5MD/10MD/15MD (OLANZAPINE TABLETS)
DESCRIPTION
Olanzapine tablets are an antipsychotic. It may increase the risk of death when used to treat mental problems caused by dementia in elderly patients. Most of the deaths were linked to heart problems or infection. Olanzapine tablets are not approved to treat mental problems caused by dementia. Olanzapine tablets are not approved for use in all children. If olanzapine tablets are prescribed for your child, talk with the doctor to be sure that olanzapine tablets are right for your child.
DOSAGE
Drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, stomach upset, dry mouth, constipation, increased appetite, or weight gain may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. To reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position.
CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY
Olanzapine has a higher affinity for 5-HT2A serotonin receptors than D2 dopamine receptors, which is a common property of all atypical antipsychotics, aside from the benzamide antipsychotics such as amisulpride. Olanzapine also had the highest affinity of any second-generation antipsychotic towards the P-glycoprotein in one in vitro study.
INDICATIONS
Oral ZYPREXA is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia. Efficacy was established in three clinical trials in adult patients with schizophrenia: two 6-week trials and one maintenance trial. In adolescent patients with schizophrenia (ages 13-17), efficacy was established in one 6-week trial
CONTRA INDICATIONS
None with ZYPREXA (olanzapine) monotherapy. When using ZYPREXA (olanzapine) and fluoxetine in combination, also refer to the Contraindications section of the package insert for Symbyax. For specific information about the contraindications of lithium or valproate, refer to the Contraindications section of the package inserts for these other products.
SIDE EFFECTS
Bloating or swelling of the face, arms, hands, lower legs, or feet, blurred vision, change in vision, change in walking and balance, clumsiness or unsteadiness, difficulty with speaking, difficulty with swallowing, drooling, impaired vision, inability to sit still, loss of balance control, mask-like face, muscle trembling, jerking, or stiffness, need to keep moving, rapid weight gain
